In today’s How to Build Passive Income as a Digital Nomad post, I want to share what I’m doing right now — not in theory, but in real life. I’m getting ready to head off on a five-week trip of a lifetime through Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, and Brazil.
It’s been my dream to visit South America and now it’s really happening. I can hardly contain my excitement. To be clear, this isn’t a break from my business — instead, it’s simply a new way of running it. I’ll still be earning, and in fact, I’ll also be checking in from time to time to make sure everything stays on track. But I won’t be tied to my laptop, squeezing work in between patchy Wi-Fi and timezone chaos.
That’s because I’ve set up income systems that don’t need me watching them every day. And that’s what this post is about — how to build income that runs in the background while you travel, take time off, or simply want a less stressful workday.
Why Passive Income Makes Sense When You’re on the Move
Now, this isn’t about working less for the sake of it. But when your income relies on being present 24/7 — replying to messages, delivering services, staying “on” — even small disruptions can throw everything off.
Whether you’re moving through countries or just trying to work smarter from home, passive income gives you breathing space. You create something once, and it continues to earn without needing constant hands-on effort.
That doesn’t mean it’s easy — but it does mean the effort builds on itself over time.
Step 1: Start With Something Simple That Solves a Specific Problem
First of all, don’t overthink it. You’re not building a full-blown online course or an all-in-one toolkit — not yet.
Instead, start with one offer that:
- Solves a clear problem
- Requires no 1:1 time with you
- Can be delivered automatically
For example:
- A Canva template pack for lead magnets
- A Notion dashboard for creators
- A one-hour video workshop
- A PDF guide or swipe file
As long as it’s helpful and self-contained, it’s a good fit. Most importantly, it should be something you can create without dragging it out for months.
Before you move on:
Ask yourself, What do people in my audience keep struggling with that I’ve already figured out? That’s usually where your best product idea is hiding.
Step 2: Let AI Help You Move Faster — Without Losing Your Voice
Once you’ve got your idea, the next step is turning it into something you can sell. This is where AI can make a real difference — not by doing all the work, but by helping you skip the slowest parts.
For example:
- Use AI to outline your product structure
- Draft landing page or email copy
- Reword clunky sentences
- Repurpose longer content into social blurbs or video scripts
Of course, you’ll want to review everything and make it sound like you. But AI helps you start with momentum, which is often the hardest part.
As you build:
- Use AI for first drafts
- Then layer in your tone and insights.
- You’ll move faster without sounding generic.
Step 3: Pick a Platform That Does the Boring Stuff for You
Once your product is ready, you’ll need somewhere to sell it. But don’t let platform decisions hold you up.
Your goal here is to choose one that:
- Delivers the product automatically
- Takes care of payments
- Integrates with your email list
- Doesn’t overwhelm you with setup
Here’s a quick breakdown:
- Gumroad / Payhip — Simple digital product delivery
- MailerLite / ConvertKit — Automated email sequences
- Teachable / Thinkific — Course hosting
- Printful / Prinitfy — Print-on-demand products
Rather than waiting:
- Sign up for one and upload a test version of your product.
- Getting familiar with the dashboard will make the real launch smoother.
Step 4: Build a Simple Funnel That Sells While You’re Off Doing Other Things
Now that your product’s good to go, it’s time to set up an easy sales system that works in the background — so you don’t have to be glued to your screen every time someone wants to buy.
Here’s a straightforward funnel:
- Offer a freebie — like a checklist, cheat sheet, or swipe file
- Deliver it through an email sequence — set up 3–5 short emails that provide value and introduce your product
- Link to your paid offer — with a clear “here’s how this helps you” explanation
You don’t need complex automation or advanced tools. What matters is that your message feels helpful, natural, and aligned with what people actually need.
If you’re stuck:
- Use AI to draft your first three emails.
- Then rewrite them like you’re talking to one person — not selling to a crowd.
Step 5: Automate, Schedule, and Let It Breathe
Once your funnel is in place, it’s time to automate the parts that don’t need you — and step back a little.
What to automate:
- Lead magnet delivery
- Welcome emails
- Product delivery
- Content scheduling (emails, YouTube, social posts)
However, automation doesn’t mean disappearing completely. You’ll still want to check in, make updates, and improve things based on feedback. The key is that your day-to-day income doesn’t depend on you being constantly available.
Keep things running smoothly:
- Block one hour per week to check stats
- Reply to questions
- Make small improvements
What This Looks Like in Real Time
During this five-week trip, I won’t be hustling for sales or managing deadlines. I’ve got content scheduled, emails queued, and products ready to go.
I’ll check in occasionally — because I want to, not because I have to. And that’s really what passive income buys you: the freedom to be more intentional with your time.
You Don’t Need a Huge Following — Just a Working System

I hope you found value in my How to Build Passive Income as a Digital Nomad post. This isn’t about going viral or making millions while lounging on a beach. It’s about creating a system that works — so you don’t have to.
Start with one product. Use AI to make the process quicker. Choose tools that keep things simple. Write a few helpful emails. Then let the system run.
It won’t be perfect at first. But it doesn’t need to be.
You’ll learn by doing. You’ll refine as you go. And before long, you’ll have income coming in — even when you’re not online to watch it happen.
To Your Success!
