How to find a bestselling product in less than 5 minutes! Now you might be asking yourself, is that even possible?

If you were getting into the ice cream business what’s the first thing you should do? Make lots of fancy flavours? Toppings? What about add-ons like lemonade, chocolate, and crisps?

The surprising answer is – none of these things!

What you need is a hungry crowd, e.g., lots of holidaymakers on a hot, sunny day, because without a demand you won’t make any/many sales.

And it’s exactly the same in the internet marketing world.

You might have a great idea for a product but it’s essential you don’t waste time and effort on it without doing proper research first.

PLEASE DO NOT make the common mistake and get things the wrong way round. There absolutely MUST be a market first before you even think of writing an ebook, creating a video set or bulk buying any stock. Ensure you’re selling what people actually want to buy.

You might think everyone is going to want a guide on “dating for Scrabble lovers“, but this would likely be far too narrow an audience meaning you’d be highly unlikely to ever make any sales. You’d have much more success with “dating tips for the newly-divorced“.

So now you’ve got a rough idea for the niche you want, how do you find out whether you’ve got a viable product?

Fortunately, this is very simple. Just use the resources below.

1. Google Keyword Tool

You can use this to check the number of searches a month in your field. Be sure to investigate the different variations of your search phrase, e.g., cycling, biking, mountain biking, road cycling. Many of these will appear automatically when you start typing your search phrase into Google. You should be looking for a minimum of around 30,000 searches per month on a search term.

2. Dummies

The Dummies range of books offers a massive range of subjects in an easy-to-understand style. If there’s a Dummies guide on your subject then there’s obviously a demand, e.g., Organic Gardening.

A great many of these books are physical products so why would the company go to the trouble of producing and printing these if there wasn’t a ready-made market? Let them do your research for you!

3. Clickbank

Look in Clickbank for similar products in your niche. A significant benefit of this platform is that you can see how a product is actually selling before you decide whether to enter this market.

You do this by looking at something called the product’s “gravity”. This is a measure of how many affiliates have been actively earning commissions with this product over the last 12 weeks. The higher the number the better here and any score over 100 is considered to be very high indeed. You can see this from the screenshot below (this is actually for a product demonstrating how to set up quick and simple websites).

Another thing to consider with Clickbank is whether or not there are any related products and how they’re selling, e.g., bass fishing, trout fishing, deep sea fishing alongside the more general fishing niche.

4. Quora

This is an excellent resource to find out if people are actively seeking answers to questions in your subject area of interest. The more questions there are, the more in-demand the topic.

5. Facebook

The obvious thing to do here is to look for groups and pages in your niche. However, you can also go to Facebook Ads and drill down into the Custom Audience to get an idea of the popularity of your niche, e.g., see below the numbers for women in the UK between the ages of 20 and 45 who are interested in golf equipment.

6. Amazon

The process here is to find a competitor’s product. Go to the “Product details” section under the product listing. If the Amazon Best Sellers Rank is between 1 and 5000 in the Top-Level Category, then this means that this product is selling every day and that’s the type of product you want.

A major benefit here is that you can analyse exactly what the competition is doing – title, images, description – and look to do it better. The screenshot below shows the rank for a Golf Club Groove Sharpener and Brush. You can see it ranks highly enough in the Sports & Outdoors Top-Level Category for it to be a product of interest to us.

7. Forums

This a sure-fire way to see if there’s a demand. Are these forums active with a lot of contributors and many recent postings? That shows it’s a hot topic.

Finding them is quite simple. Just go to Google and type in “forum”. Ensure that you never, ever try to sell anything in a post. You only want to find out what the issues are and what people need help with. Use it as a resource not a marketplace.

Now I hope you’ve got some useful information from my How to Find a Bestselling Product in Less Than 5 minutes post. I hope reading it has encouraged you to further explore ideas for getting started with your own products.
