frustrated marketer sitting in front of laptop with his head on keyboard having had his facebook ad account banned

Facebook can be a fickle beast and there’s nothing more frustrating than spending time and energy creating a Facebook ad only to see it disapproved or banned. In today’s post I’m going to share a few tips for reinstating your banned Facebook ad account if you find yourself in this unfortunate position.

Business owners know how powerful Facebook ads can be and the number of new customers they can send their way. However, many marketers discover that Facebook has deactivated their ads account completely. That can be demoralising especially if you run regular ads and have built up an active and engaged audience over time.

Running Facebook ads can be challenging at the best of times and having your ads disapproved is an added pressure you don’t need. I’ve had my ads disapproved on a few occasions. However, thankfully to date I haven’t had my account deactivated. Often, I’ve not understood why Facebook has rejected my ad and sometimes I don’t think Facebook knows either! Facebook doesn’t employ real people to check your ads for compliance with their rules but instead uses algorithms. Oftentimes, these algorithms aren’t accurate and make mistakes. This can be extremely inconvenient and especially annoying if you’re someone who’s facing a deadline.

New or Reinstated

If you find your Facebook account has been disabled, for whatever reason, you may just be able to create another account. However, make sure you tread carefully going forward. Now, if Facebook decides to disable your personal account you have a big problem. You’ll probably find it difficult to create a new personal account for ads because Facebook is generally scrupulous about tracing duplicates.

Go to Your Ads Manager

First thing to do is head over to your Facebook Ads Manager. Once you’re on the main page here you should see a yellow bar at the top that indicates your account is no longer active. Click on the box. You’ll then be directed to a page that will guide you through the process of reinstating your account.

You can also go directly to Facebook‘s support centre. It’s not easy to spot initially but a question mark icon should appear in the top-right corner of the page. A scroll-down menu will appear. Just navigate to the bottom of the screen where you’ll see “more help” and contact customer support.

Check Your Email

Now, if neither of these options work for you it’s possible to appeal directly to Facebook depending on what’s going on with your account. You can do this whether your Facebook ads account was simply restricted, for example, Facebook may have limited your account because it was flagged up for suspicious activity or, if your account was disabled completely.

In my experience it’s advisable to explain your situation clearly and in a courteous manner. Don’t go in with all guns blazing. This type of behaviour will not help get your issue resolved quickly. Supply them with as much information and details as you can. If you take time to word your appeal properly you may get your account reinstated.

Prevention is the Best Medicine

Being in a position where your Facebook ads account is disabled, for any reason, can be disastrous. This is particularly frustrating if you’re on a tight schedule. For example, you may be running a time sensitive ad for a product launch, or new business opening. Prevention is the best plan.

To help you stay focused and up to speed consider the following 7 points:

1. Make sure you familiarise yourself with all of Facebook‘s guidelines and ad policies. Avoid violating any of these!

2. Seek legal advice for your privacy policy, terms and conditions, refund policy, custom disclaimers, and so on.

3. Your landing pages, in most cases, should clearly display your business name and contact information.

4. Enhance your users’ experience. You want your prospects to get the most out of your pages. Don’t irritate them by advertising sites with annoying popups or links that don’t work. Also, don’t confuse them with unclear content.

5. Don’t run ads that are spammy. In addition, don’t use clickbait ads or ads which your targeted audience may find offensive.

6. Always ensure all your info is 100% accurate and that you’re presenting your content in an ethical, honest, and transparent way.

7. Once your account has been reinstated (if disabled), consider using a different payment method from the previous one. This will help to evade an accidental penalty from Facebook. You certainly want to avoid going through this again.
